In addition to the poseable figures, the Monster Scenes line included numerous interlocking playsets that could be combined to create a creepy castle environment, complete with freaky critters and wacky gizmos! They were a kid's delight and a parent's worst nightmare! It was these sets in particular that outraged parents and brought on the end of the kit line, and thus began the decline of the great Aurora.

Kit #640-130 / Issued: 1971

Along with raising the dead, flirting with vampires and keeping his colleague Dr. Jekyll's flask full, Dr. D. also found time to twist the DNA of dragonflies and scorpions to create this vicious critter. Who's got the Raid?

Many of the essentials of Dr. Deadly's lab are here, including beakers and vials full of noxious chemicals, strange spark- emitting machines, and a ferocious genetically-mutated jackrabbit. It's just business as usual for the Good Doctor.

Kit #636-200 / Issued: 1971

Here's the diabolical companion to the Chamber of Horrors Guillotine of 1965. Meant to herald the release of a series of torture devices, it was the only MS kit widely issued, and it just ended up in a corner of Dr. D's rumpus room!

These kits never got past the prototype phase. That's a real shame, as these sets really round out the whole Monster Scenes environment. However there are resin recasts available. Yee-haw!

Cool art by Diana Morris

Box designed and sold by
MIKAL Vollmer.

Here's some cool fan-made custom box art for a kit that never made it off the Aurora assembly line. It would have been a terrific addition to the MS line. Imagine the poor Victim being "burnt" as a witch here. Unfortunately, it exists purely in the wishful imagination of MIKAL Vollmer.

Place your mouse over the images to see my edits :) [with apologies to MV.]

Here's a bit from MIKAL on the creation of this little gem:

"The Stake was a project which I created back in the early 90’s when I was selling reproductions of Monster Scenes boxes....I made less than two dozen over the years that I made them. I sold the original painting along with a build-up of the box on ebay last year. I designed the painting in pencil and Diana Morris did the painting. Then I reduced the image and created the mock-up over a Victim box. So that’s how that happened."

Unfortunately, this item is no longer being produced, so you'll have to hope one comes up for sale again on eekBay!
